Only you will know if it is a good career choice for you... ideally, you will find something you are are passionate about and make a living at it. I recieved my Bachelor's Degree in Child Development and Family Studies. I worked as a teacher's assistant at local pre schools while in college. While I loved working with the children, I found my favorite part of the day was when the parents came to pick their children up... No, it wasn't because I was tired and ready to go home! I loved watching the parents interact with their children. I realized that I loved working with children - but I didn't want to be a teacher. I decided to pursue the social services route. I worked in a variety of group homes and Child Protective services as a children's social worker. Eventaually I earned my Master's degree in Counseling Psychology and became a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I currently am in private practice and work with children, adolescents and families. I love being my own boss and the flexibility of planning my own schedule. I can see clients when my own children are in school. The pay is also good - I only work 15 hours a week and make over $60,000 a year. As I said before, ideally, you will discover your passion and make a living out of it. I love what I do..it doesn't seem like work! If you like children, think out of the box. Being a teacher is only one of the possibilities. As sad as it is, teachers are not fairly compensated in our country. It's really a shame. It would be difficult to support yourself on a preschool teacher's salary (I live in California though, it may be easier in less expensive parts of the country - maybe another person will post their experience.) Good luck with your choice... I think your smart to think ahead about balancing work and family... many women don't consider this when pursuing a career. Good luck... hope this helps.

Great choice for a career for someone who wants to raise their own family. i don't think it is well paying though...sadly. It should be since it is a career that will help shape future generations and give kids a good start in life.

Child Development is a rewarding field. The money, in my opinion is in administration, training teachers, or in-home business of caring for children.

It is a great career choice but you have to be dedicated because you are similar to the foundation of education to these children and it is the point where their minds are like sponges

It depends on if you really enjoy children... The pay isn't very good but if you want to take that on as your career then go ahead!!
