Push the safety issue. You need to be reachable at all times!! This way she can keep tabs on you.

First off, let's differentiate between WANT and NEED. You NEED food, water, and air to survive. That's a need. No matter how much you really really really really really (etc.) want a phone, it's still a want.

However, you can't argue that a cell phone is a VERY convenient thing to have. At 13, it's not as great a want as it will be at 15, when you will be more active. Once you start doing a lot of activities outside the home, then a cell phone becomes almost necessary. When our kids started needing rides from swim practice, meets, church functions, etc, a cell phone came in VERY handy.

When you do reach that point, have a nice sit-down talk with your mom (they like that). Then explain the need for her to be able to contact you, and how much easier it will be for her to know your whereabouts any time, without having to worry about finding and using a pay phone.

Does your mom have a cell phone? You might be able to get on a family plan, which only charges $10 more per month than a single phone. There are also plans that only allow you to call certain numbers, which might make her feel better.

If you do get it, you can't treat it like a toy. DON'T download tons of ring tones, pictures, videos. DON'T use it to send text messages unless you have a data plan. If you run up the bill, that's a quick way to get the phone taken away. Also, make sure you get a plan with free nights and weekends, so you can talk all weekend for free.

Hope this helps!

Oh My Gawd I hope she doesn't make you wait!
Research the prices and service and then present you mom with an analysis of which one would be the best deal. My friend lets her teen take the family phone when necessary - only to have the teen run up $300 + in fees down loading stuff and generally playing - But I'm sure that wouldn't be something you would do.

You don't need a cell phone. You just want one.
