What is the major issue facing the forest industry today?

The biggest issue in forestry is still the softwood lumber tariffs. The US just went and taxed huge fees on Canadian lumber coming into the US. This protected their producers, but has lead many companies in BC to go out of business or to be bought up by foreign companies, mostly from the US. The tariffs go against several treaties (NAFTA, WTO) we have with the US, and challenge several time in NAFTA panels and International Trade Commissions. Canada won all the cases, but the US kept on. They collected $5 Billion dollars.

The current Canadian government, who is pro American has agreed to a US offer. The agreement lets the US keep $1 Billion dollars and eventually pay us some money back. (The tribunal decisions say they owe it all back.) It limits trade based on last year’s values. Accept, last year’s values are based on unfair trade practices and Canadian companies going out of business. Basically, the Canadian Government sold us out.

Why are Salmon stocks declining?

Salmon Stocks are declining? I don’t know if that is the recent experience from the last year or so, but it is the historical decade-to-decade long-term experience. Right now, patterns have still definitely changed.
