Jan. '74 Dolphins 24 - Minnesota 7 yeah yeah we both know.

But why was that game played at Rice Stadium if it was to be in Houston and not the Astrodome? It had already been home to the Oilers and Astros for a decade.

I know that Super Bowl 9 (Steelers-Vikings 74-75) was slotted for the Superdome but it was not completed. They ended up back at Tulane Stadium. And that was THE worst stadium that a SB was played at. They had SB's 4, 6, and 9, and the turf was bad for 2 of those occasions. Look at the old NFL Films highlights of SB 4. It's muddy as hell.

So why SB 8 at Rice Staduim? I'm just curious why they chose that venue.

The NFL and the city of Houston agreed to hold a large pre-game Super Bowl party at the Astrodome while having the game at Rice Stadium to generate more revenue. The Texas hoedown served almost 3,000 guests beef, pork, baked beans, and mexican delicacies while bartenders served drinks in the Astrodome on the night before the Super Bowl.

The Oilers played in the Astrodome starting in 1968.

As for Super Bowl IV being muddy as hell, it was not nearly that bad. Many games were played in similar conditions back in that era. Back in the day I watched one much worse - The 1977 playoff between the Rams and Vikings, aptly named "The Mud Bowl."

This was the first time in Super Bowl history that the game site was a true neutral field. All of the previous Super Bowls were held at a home field of an existing NFL team (Yes, the Oilers played at Rice before they moved to the AstroDome)..

[It WAS built by that year...1965 was opening day!]

To the first guy, nobody knows but you can make a logical prediction. Before last season started, I picked the Packers, then changed my choice to the Eagles before the postseason, then went back to the Packers when they beat the Eagles. So I guess I was right. Everyone's saying Eagles vs Patriots and I'll be no different. Very seldom does one player make a team great, but that's the case with Tom Brady, who's supporting cast got a little better through the offseason. The Eagles have the best cornerback tandem in the league with Aso and DRC. Their front 7 might even improve from an Asante Samuel trade. Eagles win it all, 31-24.

Rice Stadium has a bigger capacity than the Astrodome (by about 8,000); I don't know if that's the real reason but it would be my guess.

The Astrodome wasn't built in 1974.
