The winner will qualify for the UEFA Cup. However, if the winner is already qualified to the UEFA or Champions League by their EPL's league position, the losing team in the Carling Cup will qualify for the UEFA Cup as well. West Ham is an example as they qualified through the UEFA Cup this season.

They qualify for the UEFA cup, however if they have already qualified Europe via the league then the next placed league team goes into the UEFA cup, as was the case last season - Wigan did not get into Europe despite Manchester United qualifying for the Champions League.
