Just like sports: individuals win, lose, or tie, which causes populations or species to increase in size/number; decrease, or remain in equilibrium, respectively. In the long term, if competing species remain in competition, it is likely that natural selection will cause divergence in traits which reduce the competition. For example if two bird species of different sizes compete for the same seeds, and one bird is a little smaller than the other, causing a disadvantage in the ability to eat the seed, then small birds that eat a different type of seed are more likely to survive and reproduce than the smal birds that remain in competition with larger birds. If the two bird species eventually develop completely different eating habits, they will no longer compete.

Really depends on the level of competition. One can exclude the other, the two could shift somewhat so that both utilize the same resources, or one may nearly completely alter it's needs and find a new niche. All of these are based on how adaptable both competing animals are.

According to the competition exclusion principle one species will outcompete and push the other species into extinction. HOWEVER, this is not always the case. The species can evolve many symbiotic relationships in which they "share" resources such as mutualisms etc.

The species that wins lives, and you can pretty much guess what happens to the loser.
