Each Tribe (and sub group) would have different symbolism for each symbol, but often symbols are similar: for example, a bear might signify strength for a number of groups, or a deer could represent speed to a number of groups. But a bear might represent wisdom to another tribe, or perhaps a fishing spirit.

each tribe had their own meanings although many were similar there are a few which were very different. as an example the Owl meant wisdom and knowledge in some tribes but then in other tribes Owl was a Bringer of Death.

the symbolism is very differant, for example
to the Lakota (sioux) the owl is a symbol of wisdom and knowlege.
to the Navijo it is a symbol of Death.
every tribe changes and the changes can be very differant. that is why many people will introduce themselves by their given name, and then state their tribe. this way people will know why they were named in that manner.

American Indian animal symbolism is as deep and varied as strological, numerological and/or a range of metaphysical symbolism. Although there may be a core symbolic meaning for a specific animal symbolism, we will alwways find more or less greater or weaker insight into the symbolism by those who are aware of it. It's a type of those-who-have-eyes-to-see-and-ears-to-hear kind of thing.
