I look for a good story (not plot, but STORY. The two are entirely different). As I get into the story, if the characters are not three dimensional, I will more than likely put the book down because without realistic characters the conflict and drama that results will be contrived and banal.
Another big thing for me are dystopian stories and books that are beyond categorization, such as the Nova Trilogy by William S. Burroughs.
As for genre, I only stay away from romance. Huxley, Orwell, Pynchon, W.S. Burroughs, Lovecraft, Poe, Joyce, and Ellison are among my favorite authors.

If a story catches my eye, it is usually because the dialouge (if any) is good and that the story is unique. If I ever have to read one more book about a over-materialistic girl who realizes that stuff isn't the meaning of life, I might die. Ture-to-life characters are the ones I enjoy best. I love the books that Sarah Dessen, Walter Dean Meyers, and Tamora Pierce write.

The opening page. If this is intriguing, I'll go forward. The
momentum of the story, whatever it is, will propel me into
the body of the tale and make me want to find out what
happens.

If i get partway through and can't stop myself from looking in the back to see how it all turns out . . . . that's a good book.
