Don't worry so much about YOU hurting his feelings; if it came from stranger, that would REALLY hurt his feelings.
You can be gentle, though. Just mention privately to him that he must have been working out pretty hard (or something like that) because you've noticed lately that he could stand to shower a bit more. If you exhibit true parental concern, I don't think he'll really be offended.
