I'm not putting them down. Just curious as to the players they target. They are all nearly approaching the ends of their careers or in the prime, with prime clubs. If the clubs and countries that have/had them cannot hold them, it's unlikely they will go until the league is more stabile and internationally competitive. They need to be careful too a little that they don't end up as a retirement league or any benefit to football in the country will soon dwindle again.

I heard those reports about zz but i dont think he's at that pt. yet where he misses football. there's talk about ronaldinho too but all unconfirmed rumours. as for the MLS going after these players, it can't hurt to have a little ambition, can it? besides, getting some big names to play in their league would up the game's appeal to americans, at the very least improve viewing stats which means more awareness and patronage of the game itself. all good things and great devts for football in general. europe is more competitive professionally , true, but if players like becks and ronaldo who have some good years left in them don't get the right opportunities there, I think they're better off elsewhere even in the so-called retirement league. As a football fan, i simply want them to have their chances, see them play a few more years, retire when they're ready and do so on their own terms.

USA is a good team with good players, otherwise they wouldn't even participate in the World Cup...maybe until now the MLS league is under better management! The country does not lack the money or sponsors! Look what just happened with Beckham! That's a better deal than any other country would have ever offered. This country is full of different nationalities including Europeans, and guess where the younger generations are learning Football! Here in the USA. The only bad thing is, once they grow up to be great players, european countries buy them! why do you think their teams are so great?
They have players from all over the world! it was about time someone started something big here in USA, it will take sometime, but it will happen even though is perceived like they are a little carried away. All football soccer fans united will make it happen!

The MLS is trying to bring a high level of soccer to a country not known for this game. The Beckham signing is the first step and RBNY signed US Captain Claudio Reyna also making the league better. Unlike the NASL, college soccer is now a big deal and quality players come from the NCAA and into MLS. With the NASL there was no feeder program. The MLS will have success and this is only step 1.

No buddy.

The only people getting carried away about Beckham coming to America are people outside of America because other than about 1% of America's population nobody would give a dam if even Ronaldhino showed up at the doorstep to play.

The only thing that could help soccer in America would be if people could somehow forget basketball, baseball, US football, and hockey ever existed.

America is going to have to popularize soccer from within, because Beckham coming to the US makes more news outside of the US than inside the country. That's pretty pathetic.

Yeah i read this on another website today, Zidane will never go, and he already rejected them, Larsson wants to go back to his home country and retire there, but u never know if the money would make Larsson consider his options again.... and YES the USA are getting a bit carried away, they are looking to buy all those big players while most the Americans have never even heard of them lol except for those who follow football of course.... and a lot of the Americans didn't even watch their national team in the worldcup! Its not a football country, and dragging those players there will be like wasting talents, most of the Americans make fun of the game and don't appreciate it, if the big players go to the MLS no one would watch them except for the MLS fan, no one outside the USA watches the MLS! the real football is in Europe, people watch european football for the real thing!

they have to start somewhere though. sure theres no way they could ever the top talent in the world, or even a young guy with potential. money wise its not appealing, competition wise its not close to europe or south america. so theres is little appeal to stars. that why there going after the old guy who have a little left in the tank and like the american publicity and media, plus they get to live in america. give mls 20 years till it is competitive with the top european leagues. internationally they will never be competitive with europe.

Maybe, but we're just excited here. We're excited to see what will happen, where the MLS will be in the future. I guess we really don't need to make such big moves right away, because we don't know exactly what to expect with such moves, and how it'll affect the MLS, but we're just excited to see soccer becoming a bigger sport than it was and we're just excited to make it bigger and better here in the States. So, you can't blame us completely for hoping...But I guess you can blame us a little for jumping too fast.

The US is trying to draw fans that would not traditionally watch soccer, to watch by signing soccer players that have established their name already. If they sign someone that is an excellent young player that no one has heard of, it will not draw the crowds that the now mediocre David Beckham is drawing.

you are very right about having to be careful but I didnt see the us matches in the world cup... they just dont a style. but this made news in ESPN(a major sports network) And honestly I hate to break it to you this league is always going to be a retirement league. Whats sad is American fans who are soccer fans here in the US, some of them put me down for me being a "Eurosnob" for only watching the European leagues. Its kinda ridiculous really. But Zidane is well known here for his headbutt. Thats about it.

They're just trying to make footy a more popular sport in the U.S. by bringing famous foreign players. And I guess that cash can buy whatever...
