Ludicrously, yes ... it is apparently OK for blacks to call themselves it, but not whites

Most people would say yes. The fact that you needed to ask this question shows that you are extremely ignorant about race issues, lets see if I can help you out. The rule of thumb: some blacks don't mind being called *****, some are completely offended by that. All black people, and most people with an ounce of respect, despise the word "N"igger. Including myself. If you are a white person, it may be alright to use ***** around your black friends, and they may refer to you in the same manner. However, it is better to avoid that word all together. Any use of the word, no matter how you say it or who you say it to, is grounds for getting your a$$ kicked where I come from. Even if your black friends are calling each other ******..I would not tread there.

No matter what race you are you should never use a stereotype word that might offend or hurt anyone.
When in doubt don't.

How about not using the word at all. There is not good way to use that word. And if it is deemed not racial would you still use it?
