"People choose their own addictions." If you think so, how can we make better choices of our addictions?

i think this is true, to a certaing extent, i think people are drawn to certain things by other influences, if your parent smoke cigarettes as you grew up chances are that you will too, same goes for alcohol, drugs ... i think people are influenced by what or who is around them whether they choose certain addictions out of curiosity or to fit in ... we can make better choices by knowing the risks and thinking for ourselves, but at the end of the day people do choose their own addictions, you can say no, it is your own choice because it is your mind and your body and it's up to you to decide how you treat it.

I think it is true. Nothing starts out as an addiction....we make it one based on our own inability to control our desire to do it. We can make better choices by selecting activities that nurture our body, mind, and soul. Instead of going to the casino we should go to the gym. Rather than experimenting with different alcholic beverages at the local establishment or our own homes, we should experiment with recipes to make our bodies healthier. When we reach for that cigarette or cup of coffee we know we shouldn't have we really need to be reaching for our dreams. And when we drive around looking for the next bookie or drug dealer we should be walking and listening to the sounds of the earth and making our bodies healthier--both physically and mentally. Rather than sitting in front of the tv or computer chatting meaninglessly, we should write that novel or letter to a loved one we've been meaning to.

Choose? I don't think we CHOOSE them. We choose to do the things we can become addicted to because we want to, but I don't think we ever choose to actually become addicted to them.

I don't think the choice is a conscious choice. I think people are conditioned to use certain substances if they see those around them using those substances to deal with life.
