18 dimes, and 2 quarters. A dime is 10 cents, so 10 x 18 is a $1.80. $2.30 - $1.80 is 50 cents, so 2 quarters since a quarter is worth 25 cents. This is 20 coins, so this is the right answer. The way to start a question like this is to estimate and keep trying combos until you reach the right one. Or depending on your age you would use a more complex equation to figure the answer out. I hope this helped.

Wow. People don't read the whole question I guess.

18 dimes, 2 quarters.

It states that there are 20 coins.

You get 3 dimes an 8 quarters.

You would need at least 2 quarters ($.50) to complete this, as the one's place is a 0. From there, you need only $1.80, so it would be 18 dimes and 2 quarters.

I've forgotten the equation to do this, but this will suffice for now.

This is a system of equations problem.
let x be the number of dimes and y be the number of quarters.
Since there are 20 coins altogether you can write:
x + y = 20
Also you know that the number of quarters and dimes has to add up to $2.30:

0.10x + 0.25y = 2.30

So now you have 2 equations and two variables... just solve it

let x = dimes Then quarters = 20 -x

.1(x) + .25(20-x) = 2.30

.1x + 5 - .25x = 2.30

-.15x = -2.70
x = 18

18 dimes = 1.80 2 quaters = 50 cent

I don't think you should use a system of equations if you can subtract one from the other.
