There must be millions. A lot of things you can do as an employee can also be done on a self-owned (or sole proprietorship) basis. Just a few examples:

Professional (dental, medical, legal, etc)

I guess franchise operations should be included - you own the business but pay the company for use of the franchise.

Consulting is common among experienced retirees.

An enterprise can be self-owned, stockholder owned, government owned, partnership, etc. (see ref. below), but the type of enterprise is not greatly limited by the type of ownership. Different ownership formats have different legal advantages so, for example, a lot of physicians prefer to operate as incorporated rather than sole proprietorship.

Hi, with all this rain, and very occassionally some sunshine, gardens are getting full of weeds. I would gladly pay someone such as yourself to weed my garden. Including removing the dandelions etc on my lawn. If you decide to do this, I suggest you wear gardening gloves and tough footwear, but otherwise can use the householder's own tools (viz. a handfork or hoe). For 1 hour's good work I would pay you as much as £10. Others, I think, would however settle for around £5. Hope this helped...

The overall number of self-employed workers in the United States in the late 1990s stood at about 10 million.

In general, male independent contractors tended to work as managers, construction workers, writers and artists, and real estate and insurance agents in the late 1990s, whereas female independent contractors tended to work as managers, writers and artists, real estate and insurance agents, salespeople, and childcare providers, according to the BLS. Overall, about 17 percent of self-employed workers performed executive, administrative, and managerial tasks during this period. These workers either ran their own businesses or were self-employed as accountants and other professionals. By 2006, the BLS expects the percentage of self-employed professionals to reach 18.7. Self-employed workers performing service-related tasks such as providing child care or home health care services accounted for 11.5 percent of all self-employed workers during this period and the percentage of self-employed service workers is forecast to reach 12.6 percent by 2006.
