Wow... people please do some research! Of course it was a good idea to spend the money, as that much talent (and the possibilities of a team with that much talent) will drive up the selling price. Furthermore, Lilly is a rock. He is a solid veteran who eats up innings and despite being 1-1, should be 2-0. Now residing in the National League, he will continue to excel against teams who don't field a watered down Murderer's Row, like the teams in the AL do. He will easilly win 12 or more games this year if they are productive for him. Soriano strikes out too much, but he makes up for that with runs and ribbies. Once he's on base, he's always a threat to score. Between the revamped pitching staff, made up of solid and tested arms, including Dempster (who I think will own this year), and a slugging lineup, I think the Cubs have as good a chance as any NL team to represent the league in the Series. By the way, I'm a Yankees fan. I'm not impressed by the Cubs spending money. I'm impressed with what they got for their money. Very, very nice and intimidating team.

Money does not always buy you a championship. This is the case with this years Cubs. Sure they spent a lot of money, but did they spend it wisely? The Cubs already had a pretty good offensive team, but instead of spending money to get a quality ace pitcher, they spend most of it on Alfonso Soriano. The money could have been much better spent if they got the best pitcher available AND added depth to their line-up. No, based on the Cubs' history, I don't think they will have their best season.

Nope. Then again with the exception of the Pittsburgh Pirates, all of the teams in the NL Central are comparable and can win the division.
Even with the $300 million they threw in the free agent market this off season, they still didn't upgrade themselves that much. They still have question marks in the pitching rotation. Besides, Carlos Zambrano who do they have in their rotation can you count on to win every time they take the mound? Lilly? Too inconsistent. Prior and Woods? Can't stay healthy.
It is obvious that with the hiring of Lou Pinella and Bring in Soriano, et al that the mandate in Chicago is to win now. Especially since the White Sox beat them to a World Series win a couple of seasons ago. I don't know if the money was spent correctly.

If spending lie crazy was the key to winning then the cubs would have the second best season behind the yankees who have spent upwards of 300 billion over the last 10 years, so NO they will still suck, only a little less than last years horrendous outing.
btw whitesox won the WS title with a fairly minimal budget.

No, money cannot buy you wins and you need to have the right players, not the most expensive. The Cubs just spent well over $300 million on another losing season.

It is doubtful.
They will be better than last year just on the basis of Derek Lee being able to play. Soriano will help, and a full season Cesar Ituris at shortstop will help a lot.
But that gets them to an average to an above average team level.
They will need their pitchers to stasy healthy and big years to contend.

I think they'll do great this season, but not just becase of the new players they got.
I think Derrik and Aramis will do awesome.
I also think Ronny will be much better than last season.

They've spent that money and they haven't offered a thing to their best pitcher, Carlos Zambrano. I figure they'll lose him after 2007 because they won't be able to offer him a package like Zito's, who's not as good as him.
They chose to lose him. As simple as that.

You have to say that they improved their team with some of the signings, but to go from Worst to First is highly unlikely
