Cingular acquired AT&T Wireless in 2004. AT&T Wireless was a spinoff of AT&T Corp. Meaning that they were not the same company, AT&T Wireless traded off the stock symbol: AWE; while AT&T Corp. traded off of the 'T' symbol.

Here's how it breaks down:
In 2001 (I believe that was the year), AT&T Wireless became a separate company from AT&T Corp.

In 2004 Cingular bought out AT&T Wireless and named the merged companies- Cingular.

---Cingular was co-owned by BellSouth and SBC Communications.

In 2005 SBC Communications bought AT&T Corporation and changed their own name to AT&T.

In 2006 AT&T (now the former SBC) bought Cingular's other parent company, BellSouth.

Since they now owned both of Cingular's parent companies they own Cingular as well. So they changed the BellSouth name to AT&T and they changed the Cingular name to AT&T.

Hope this helps.

Cingular did buy AT&T Wireless, but is calling itself the new AT&T for marketing reasons. They do this to appeal and bring back the AT&T Wireless customers who switched plans when Cingular bought AT&T Wireless.
