Which has more energy and is more powerful,a solar flare with more energy than a billion 100 megaton nuclear bomb,or a asteroid the size of texas moving at 134,000 MPH.Can't you think of a 100 megaton nuclear blast, but a billion of them going off at the some time,(the largest nuclear blast was at 58 megaton and look at how powerful it was and what it did)And o boy the asteroid impact, this is just way to powerful,i have read that a asteroid 18 miles wide moving at 67,000 MPH would just be to powerful to add up,but try to think of a very high yield megaton nuclear bomb going off ever second for more than 6,000 year and compress all of that into one giant blast, think of how much energy that is on impact, how powerful is that,i love natural disasters of all kinds and i like to talk about them all please email at (bowlingkingred@yahoo.com)sorry about the long question i write.

Have no idea what motivated this question and the additional rhetoric. A solar Flare is more apt to cause the greatest damage. The Magnetos sphere protects the Earth. The asteroid as per your example would wipe us out for the fact that there is no protection. Damage is one thing, but a wipe out is just that, thus, damage is not relevant.

Asteroid impact would do more harm, because of just that, the impact would probably destroy the planet literaly while a solar flare would burn the surface and atmostphear, leaving the planet intact, not in pieces.
Maybe past mass extintions were caused by massive solar flares in addition to asteriod impacts which we know have caused past mass extintions.
Lets hope niether happen again and we should always keep an eye in the sky looking for those killer asteroids and finding a way to avoid them.

Boggles the mind. Solar flare is pure energy.
