The Republican Party of Lincoln's day is not the Republican party of today. I live in the South. Trust me, Blacks have a reason to hate Conservatives down here. Down here "Conservatives" tend to be the old fashioned type, who think Black people should go back to tending their fields. I see it and hear it everyday. It's amazing what people will say, when they don't know your political perspective. I hear awful, awful things all the time.

The Republican party has switched its views on a lot of things since then. The problem is (as a black Southerner) that Republicans have pretty much gotten away from doing anything for us. They feel that all people are born equal and that people all have the same chance at being educated and being positive members of society. Those that don't feel that feel blacks are inferior and don't deserve to occupy the same soil as them. In that thinking they also support segregation in schools, neighborhoods, and in the workplace. The KKK and other racists organizations support and endorse the Republican party (David Duke).
Republican governors in the states of Missisippi, Louisiana, and Alabama all stood in the path of blacks attending Ole Miss, LSU, and U of Alabama. Democratic leaders were the ones that fought for blacks to be able to attend these institutions.
Republicans in the south are generally the party in office, therefore they run the school boards. Schools in the south are horrible and they send the worst teachers (credential wise) to the black side of town.
Republicans in the south are the side of evil - those that opposed MLK and his fight. It wasn't Democrats it was Republicans. There are some towns blacks aren't allowed in still today, those town vote 100% Republican.
Republicans in the south are opposed to any kind of Welfare programs. Those programs are needed - although they need to revamp them.

I believe it's the other way around. The Republicans I know seem to "hate" blacks. True. Lincoln was Republican but if you look at the history of the Republican and Democratic parties they have reversed ideologies since the Civil War. I am white and have alot of Republican friends and family. They disagree with social programs because they feel those that take advantage of these programs are mostly black and don't want to help themselves. They also believe blacks feel an "entitlement" to social services simply because they are black.

Because many African Americans are from poverty stricken areas, and the Republicans are known for helping the Rich, and Democrats are known to fight for the poor, And since they come from such low income areas, their education isn't the best which causes higher drop out rates and crime, The only information they have about the Republicans is either from what their families tell them, or what they see on the evening news.
What they do not know is Republicans may appear to cater to the Rich, but in the long run it benefits the poor, bigger tax breaks to Companies and business owners creates more jobs, and a better economy.
JeanHall- I was raised in a lower class Hard core democrat white family, All whom are extremely racist, so to say that the Republicans are racist is a dumb statement. I believe they are evenly racist. Only difference is Republicans don't go out of their way to prove how unracist they are UNLIKE the democrats.

A lot of black people got their first taste of politics by hating republicans. While many of them have no idea about the good things the republican party has done for them or their communities most only equate republican as being bad for them. Honestly, its tempting to run for president as a Democrat and then really screw over black America in a way that hasnt been seen since the reconstruction of the country after the civil war.

If you knew squat about history it would make a ton of sense, see the southern republicans actully used to be called Dixicrats and were part of the democratic party, when the democrats embraced the civil rights movement under LBJ then they fled and joined the republican pary, dixiecrats were essentially supporters of segragation and therefore blacks are not going to like them, luckily for the democrtic party they joined the republicans and now blacks are far more likely to vote democratic giving that pary an edge in elections, that of course if the elections are held in a fair manner, without efforts at voter disenfranchisement, which is another republican trick to suppress minority voters.

Lmao, dumbass. Lincoln was not a southerner. The entire south used to be democrat and the north republican, it's when Nixon and his types hijacked the republican party to appeal to racist rich southern whites that the entire south went republican and blacks started voting democrat.
Seriously, I know you're racist but give blacks some credit. We're not going to vote republican because lincoln freed the slaves.

It's not obvious to you? My god, just look at the mess in New Orleans and how this president has neglected that city after Katrina. He completely ignored it as a subject in his speech last night. He didn't make one mention of it even thought the entire country is disgusted with his lack of caring and his lack of leadership. The rest of the Republican party of the south is no different. My god and you have to ask that question after that huge slap in the face to African Americans? If

because the parties basically switched in the late 60s... early 70s... people like Strom Thrumond went to the Republican side... and the South, which was traditionally Democrat, started voting Republican...
but the attitudes didn't change in the South... some may have... but many didn't...
