Turtles are reptiles and unusually dirty creatures. They can pass and spread diseases. After handling the animal , make sure to wash your hands with hot soapy water to prevent spreading disease!

from one of my grandmother's really old cook books, i read how to kill one, drain the blood, and prepare the meat to be cooked. i'll spare you the details, it was such graphic detail i still remember and am bothered by it.
