Tell them you're afraid! This will influence how they do the test. Once you sit down and roll up your sleeve, close your eyes tightly and don't open them again until you're done. It's weird, but if you can't see it happening (and if you don't see the actual needle itself) you really won't feel it as much. I swear.

Try deep breaths, but there is no guarantee that will work. Just remember it will be over in a couple second when the time comes. But if this is a large fear, things may not turn out well. My brother and I are like you too, afraid of needles, and also of seeing blood, so my brother once got blood work done, and he fainted imediatly after that. Just remember that this will turn out better in the end if you stay calm, slow, deep breaths, and when it comes time for the test, think of something pleasant, if it helps, don't look, i always find it feels more painful when you see the needle coming.

I have the EXACT same thing. Last time I had a needle was when I had my wisdom teeth extracted and they had to give me an IV. I screamed and hyperventalated and shook until they put me under because I was terrified. In the end I woke up with the IV in me and bruised myself pulling it out.
*shudder*

I have gotten a needle only ONCE without mass panic. I was depressed and listened to some music on my cd player that was the song I had with my bf at the time, and I was pretending to be brave.

Sometimes pretending to be brave helps....

All I can say is that it doesn't hurt, and as scary as it is, you will need to have it done. Bring your favourite stuffed animal, a cd player, do lots of deep breathing, drink lots of water so when you cry you don't dehydrate yourself (massive headaches after hurt more!) and try not to squirm because it will hurt more. Try bringing a book to read so that you don;t have to look... but if you are like me you can't concentrate anyways.

All i can say is I know where you are coming from and I can only wish you all the best for the future...

I have massive fear over some things also.
(hypervenilating anxiety, ect.)

Just don't try to think about it too much, when it happens.. look the other way.. maybe read something closing your eyes will make you concentrate on the needle more.
Just distract yourself as well as you possibly can.
And if its that extreme, perhaps CD player or something,
Distractions help because you don't feel the needle as much, and cant concentrate on the fear as much.

Usually when i face a fear (no matter what it may be)
i feel much better after it for not cowering out :).

Hope this or someone else helps.
Fear can be scary :(.

Hey I was the same way. I entered the medical field thinking I was going to draw fake blood from dummies or simulate drawing blood from oranges when I was suddenly told that we as students will draw blood from each other. I refused one day and the instructor told me I would fail the course. I change my mind but with total fear. I closed my eyes, took a deep breathe and put myself in another place. I felt a little pinch and when i opened my eyes the needle was in , blood was being drawn and i said is that it? It was nothing so now ill give blood anytime.

I'm not deathly afraid of needles, but I don't like them. But this may not help you. What I do is sit in the chair stick my arm out and turn my face away and squeeze my eyes shut. Don't jerk your arm or anything. You will feel when they stick the needle in, but it really doesn't hurt that bad. And it will be over before you know it. It is really not as bad as it seems. Good Luck! I know you'll do fine. :-)

Try breathing really slowly. Think to yourself - it's a mere SPLIT SECOND out of your life, and really, it's not at all painful. You will overcome this feeling. Try not to tense up as well. Good luck.
