Why can't someone use a pen on a "Scantron" answer sheet document?

Because the optical sensor is calibrated for the lead read of a # 2 pencil and ink is to viscus to provide a clear read.

Funny, I had three scantrons today. Anyway, my teacher told us that it cant read ink, it is only designed to read pencil. And only the lead of a #2 pencil
