Hi m8, I know im late in answering nur question. I am an ex windscreen fitter. Here is what u do, first check the scratch doing so by gently rubbing ur finger nail over the scfratch and if u can feel a scratch then chances are its gone too far, take it to a windscreen company and let them have a look and u might be lucky. otherwise you can use jewlers rouge to polish light scratches using a cloth and spray bottle filled with water. mark around the scratch with a marker pen from the inside so u know where it is, spray water onto the screen and put some rouge on to a wet cloth and rub away till the scratch hopefully fades. re the person who mentionedtcut, well i havent used it but if iwas to i would rather use the finer tcut for metallic paint, another way is . merr sell a scratch repair kit for car paint, its a good kit, it has compound, special buffing wheel to attach to ur drill plus other bits, all u need is the buffer and the compound , a couple of cloths one wet other dry and an electric drill. again mark screen with marker, sok the uffer in water and never let it run dry keep it wet by spraying water onto buffer, apply a little drop of compound to yhe wet buffer, u can wet the screen as well. now be carefull, as u buff the glass on low speed keep ur drill mkoving otherwise u will distort a part of the screen, do it for about 5 to 10 secs at a time keep the drilll moving, clean the area with a cloth check scratch area from both sides of screen, repeat the process untill scratch comes out, dont lean too heavily on ur drill, keep area wet and do it in short bursts. the kit is around £12 to buy but well worth it because you can use it on a lot of surfaces including plastic caravan windows and motorcycle crash helmet visors.
Good luck and let me know how u get on, dont forget to do the finger jail test first, if u feel the scratch, chances are it has gone too deep.

I live in the uk too and I saw an advert on tv a week ago for a company that come to your door and fix chips in your windscreen, they fill it with a kind of gel stuff and it makes the chip invisible and makes the windscreen safe from breaking - sorry but I can't remember the name of the company hopefully my answer might jog someone else's memory.
