They must travel 1 mile North. Just draw a picture. Start by going 6 up (just draw a line 6 miles long), then go 8 left (west), 7 down (south) and 8 east (to the right). You end up with an almost-complete rectangle, but you gotta go up one (north 1 mile) to get back where you started.
