You can put it to 'sleep' and it's the same thing. Go into 'Settings,' then 'Main Menu' and turn on the 'Sleep' option.

It sounds like it may be frozen. Check your hold switch, move it back and forth a few times, then try turning it off as normal. If that doesn't work, hold it close to your ear and listen to see if the hard drive is running, if it is you should hear a humming and clicking noise. If this is the case, the iPod will die by itself relatively quickly, then you should be able to charge it up and it will be fine. Otherwise, try plugging it into your computer to see if iTunes recognizes it. If none of this works, reset the iPod by holding down the middle button of the click wheel, and the bottom one simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds. This should reset the iPod, you might lose your music, but it almost always works if the iPod is frozen.

The trick is to scream at it really loudly!

I don't know why it's doing that but I've read a few other questions like this one. You may want to search this question on Yahoo! Answers, (since no one here is giving you a straight answer.)

Try plugging it into your computer and then disconnect it. Good luck!
