how can i get into a new document and type within it on my apple macbook?

i can get to Documents, but cant seem to type within a document- completely lost here, and cant get a genius bar appointment till next thursday

Open up the application in applications folder.

Highlight the Document by clicking on it once. Use the Get Info in File menu or use the short cut keys â+I to see if it's locked in General, unlock it if it is. If not then you can try and change it to Read & Write in Ownership & Permissions in the same Get Info window.
If your not using your Admin account, try it from there.
