I work with Texas Instruments equipement all the time and would like to advertise my services in a magazine. The ad I have lists many things about me, and also mentions that I'm a member of Texas Instruments Network Program.

Do I have to get permission to use Texas Instruments name in an advertisement? I'm sure their name is trademarked or copyrighted.

Thanks,

Don

You probably can refer to your affiliation with TI- Its known as a "nominative use" of their name. I read about a case where a Playboy Playmate used her title eg. Playboy Playmate 1999- In an online ad for non Playboy related marketing. She was allowed to make reference to her previous Playmate status. The matter did end up in court, so you run the risk of litigation unless you get prior permission.

There may be repercussions at work, because that is an implied endorsement of your services outside the work place.
They at the very least will be reluctant to use their corporate identity for your gain, especially if something bad were to happen.
Say you have a hard time and run out on your business obligations and their name becomes associated with it?
They are probably going to look out for #1 and not let you do it.
