What is the direct reason?

Something in the economy, or in the world (wars, politics, global disasters, terrorism), makes a ton of people panic and sell lots of their stocks at once. Other people see them doing it, panic, and sell lots of THEIR stocks. And so on, and so on, until it's a full-blown crisis.

Speculation: When people pay more and more for things that are not worth it, the market crash when people wake up and stop dreaming.
