could some one tell me what I need to order to fix this (I have an mac ibook). What is the part called and how much will it cost? Thanks

I hadda have mine replaced.. (but I knew that going in) about $150 at a shop.. but that was for a PC i would expect a MAC to be slightly more...

There is no FIX.. it either works or it dosent.. Its not cost efective to even think about FIXING a CD/DVD drive, nor will you find anyone that fixes them unless its just a simple software or driver issue..

Yes, it needs to be replaced.
Yes, it can be fixed.

As far as cost you have 2 things working against you.
1. It is a laptop, which requires a slim drive instead of a normal drive, which will up the cost.
2. You own a Mac, and they tend to use more expensive components.
Figure around $200 for parts and labor and you should be fine. Also a DVD Writer may not be much more expensive so you might want to consider that since you are already buying a new drive and paying for installation.

if you take it to the apple store it will probably cost you around $100 to replace the drive
