Theater, since I'm from America. The British and Canadians use theatre.

The original Webster's dictionary was the one that encouraged the simplification of (American) English spelling. Some of the changes took hold, like color for colour and theater for theatre and civilize for civilise. Others have come along later, like dialog for dialogue.

The original, unsimplified spelling is often still used in England.

So, as others have mentioned, "Theater" is usually correct in American English and "Theatre" is usually correct in Great Britain. But if your local theater is called "Theatre on the Green" then the correct spelling of its name is "Theatre"!

you can spell it either way. Theater is the usual spelling and theatre is how you would spell it in Old English but both would work.

Both are acceptable. It's not specific to US/England; both words are used in the US.

For example, movie companies use it, such as AMC Theatres, Cinemark Theatres, and United Artists Theatres.

Google "theatre" and see how many American companies come up.
