Sara's current age = x
John's currect age = x + 10

Sara's age in 4 years = x + 4
John's age in 4 years = x + 10 + 4 = x + 14

John's age in in 4 years = 2(Sara's age in 4 years)
x + 14 = 2(x + 4)

Distribute the 2.
x + 14 = 2x + 8

Subtract x from both sides.
14 = x + 8

Subtract 8 from both sides.
6 = x.

Sara is 6, and John is 16.

In four years Sara will 10 and John will be 20...twice Sara's age.

Sara's age = S

John's age = S +10

(S +10) + 4 = 2(S +4) Read that equation as John's age in 4 years is equal to twice Sara's age in 4 years.

S + 14 = 2s + 8;

So S = 6, so John's 16.

Let J equal John's age now and S equal Sara's.
The equation for their current ages is J = 10 +S
The equation for their ages in 4 years is J + 4 = 2S + 8
Isolate J on one side J = 2S + 4
Combine them 2S + 4 = 10 + S
Solve for S S=6
Add ten for John's age 16
