Ick/Ich is always present in your tank, in your fish. Stress is the main cause of Ick/Ich for all fishes including FH. Your fish can get stressed as a result of many things. I have found that Ick/Ich seems to show up most often when I add new fish to the tank. Almost every time I bring a fish home from the store and add them to a tank within a few days not only does the new fish develop Ick/Ich, but several of the other fish as well. Very frustrating.

There are a lot of products out there on the market you can try. If one product does not seem to be working, get another product and try it. However, don't give up too easily. It can take the full 10 days at times to cure it. If it does not work in that length of time, then the particular strain of Ick/Ich you are encountering could be resistant to that particular drug. BE SURE AND CHECK the ingredients of the Ick/Ich medicine you buy. See what it contains. For instance: Quick Cure contains Formaldehyde and Malachite Green. Maracide contains Tris Aminomethane, Aniline Green and Dibromohydroxymercurifluorescein. You want to make sure that if you use 2 or more products in conjunction with the other that you don't use two products that contain the same ingredients or you will be doubling the dose of the medicine and thus over dosing your fish.

I keep salt in all my tanks at all times. Ick does not like salt. Thus the salt works as an excellent preventative. I don't buy salt at the pet store because it is way too expensive. I buy regular table salt at the grocery store. Make sure you use only NON-IODIZED or PLAIN salt. The iodine will kill the fish. I use 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. The salt also aids in repair damaged fins, etc. It is a really good thing to use. Your fish do not have to be salt water fish to use this. Regular tropical fish are just fine with it. It does not hurt them at all. Since using salt for over a year now, I have had only one case of Ick and it was cured in 2 days, though I treated for the full 5 days.

For FLOWERHORNS, there are two additional things that works very well. ONE: Increase the temperature of your tank to 29 degree C and make 25% water change. This works very well specially with FH. It will help.

One more thing..when you add salt the first time to your aquarium you use 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. When you do a water change or perform a tank cleaning then you need to add enough salt to bring the concentration back up to full strength. In other words, if you take out 10 gallons of water then you add 2 Tablespoons of salt; if you take out 20 gallons of water then you add 4 Tablespoons of salt; and so on. Don't worry about getting too much salt because it won't hurt a thing

well flowerhorns i THINK can live together forever if the tanks big enough (ur tank is big enough) the only fish i think that has to be housed alone is some piranhas and snakeheads which most snakeheads can be species only tanks but i have a black piranha and he cant even live with other black piranhas cuzz he'll kill them but i am pretty sure flowerhorns can live together espiccely since they grew up together because even in some cases the black piranhas can live with another black if they grew up together but i mean piranhas are WAYYY more agresive then cichlids so yea im pretty sure urs will be fine together forever just dont seperate them then re intorduce them later onn....as for tank mates in 100 gallon u dont got mush choice maybe an oscar but only one cuzz flowerhorns are bigg fish and need alot of space .but maybe a pacu or two i have 3 pacu and 5 oscars in a 125 gallon and there cool with eacother just be sure whatever u get to put in there with them be sure the other fish is of good size so they dont gang up on it and kill it

It is caused by a sudden drop of temperature in your tank which is usually caused by an open window in fall/winter or, your tank heater fails, or adding cooler water to your warmer tnk during a water change.

Make sure you always have ick meds or aquarium salt on hand.
Aquari-sol works well as a Preventive Medication.

MAIN CAUSE OF ICK is not 'stress'--it's a drop in water temp.

Ich is a parasite. It's thought to occur in all aquaria, but fish are particularly susceptible to it when they are stressed.

First, you should correct the cause of the stress. This could be an incorrect temperature, too much/little aquarium salt, or poor water conditions (ammonia/nitrate/pH).

Second, get an anti-ich medication. You should be able to find one at any pet store (or even WalMart). I like Quick Cure - the dose is 1 drop/gallon, so there is nothing to measure.
