I believe that racism is something that is instilled in people at a young age. I firmly believe its upto parents to explain to their children how wrong racism is and the ill-effects it has on society. Unfortunately its not that easy, ignorant people are still under the illusion that any other race apart from their own are not to be trusted and are the root of all evil, where its actually the racist people themselves who are the evil ones.

I think though as the world is becoming a more multi-cultural place with different races living amongst each other, maybe this might change. I do think that over the years, a sort of 'fear of the unknown' has played a deep part in peoples racist behaviour

Can I also just add though that after reading your additional comment saying that the answers are no help to you, that you havent made the question clear at all. Are you looking for the effects of racism, the cause of racism, where it originated, what its like in the 21st Century or what?????
Its obvious what racism is, its discriminatory treatment towards someone due to their colour, sexual pref., age, etc.......anything that may be different from one person to the next and using that in a discriminatory way againast that person. You dont need me to tell you that, thats clear and simple. So what are you looking for then??????????

Ok where do I start... The problem in america today is People using Race, Religion, etc. as a way to be treated more fairly. Yes, you are going to be discriminated. If there is one thing I know it's that racism and prejudice will always exist. Blacks aren't the only ones discriminated, but also whites, asians, native americans, etc. Does anyone read the bible? Jews were prosecuted for thousands of years, compared to the couple hundred of blacks? Not to mention the holocaust. I have never heard a jewish person complain about harsh treatment. There is a reason behind this, people like Martin Luther King stood up and achieved equality for people who deserved it. People today want political correctness. Political correctness used to be a shield but today it is a sword. This problem doesn't come with a color or religion. It is the way america is now. My message to all people is if you want equality then dont be prejudice or racist, or don't get upset when people are racist or prejudice towards you. By the way people racism and mistreatment have no color, there are only good people and bad people. I am in no way racist and think others should follow suit with my opinions. As for people being discriminated take a book from the page of the bible or Ghandi or Martin Luther king, even if you don't believe in god or like the above people learn to turn the other cheek, this is the one of the only way to eventually eliminate racism. Some people are stubborn and can't do this. By not turning the other cheek, you yourself are will develop hate towards a race and become a racist yourself.

Well, I can tell you my story, I am from Central America, and well, I was lucky, I was born into high class. I was used to the lifestyle, to being my father's daughter.. people knowing who my family is.. well, a pretty comftable life. By the way, I am very white, not dark-skinned, and a young not-bad looking woman (background). I had been in Europe a year, before, and I loved it, the people though I was so exotic, and my boyfriend was crazy about me.. then I married, and came to Europe, I expected to study, and pretty much live like in the movies, going to theater, and another lifestyle. I ended up in a small town, where the people that sorround me are racist, even my mother-in-law.. and well, I always empathised with the people that had to deal with racism, and I was always against it.. but know that I'm dealing with it, I realised, how hard it is, always to be the "better person", how hard it is to try to talk myself into not caring what they say, how hard it is, not to strike back, because I could say so many bad things.. but I don't want to be that kind of person.. this is just eating me up inside, and my husband's friends, they are still in the university, they are completely different, they don't discuss foreigners and how bad they are every spare minute.. so I'm thinking, this is probably because I'm in a town, hopefully in a city it will be different.. I don't know, after 2 years I am tired of trying to integrate into their culture.. I am now seeking latinas as friends, just foreigners, who won't make me feel like I'm less.. so I don't have to grow to be bitter, because frankly, I don't want to be "better person" anymore, and I don't want to have to defend myself anymore.. Racism is just ignorance... but as a person.. don't racists (or everyone that discriminates..) know that their comments are so hurtful, and how they are the cause for hate.. and the whole vicious circle that accompanies it..

I faced racism everyday in the workplace, I worked for the Social Secuirty Administration during the Clinton regime (office FO-857). I don't think there is a more racist environment anywhere.

Ask a black person what they think about racism. They will tell you aaaalllll about ice cream flavors. Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry.. Very tasty conversations they have. Also real food you know, those side items. Crackers mainly.

in my opinion, racism is a load of ****. its just a way of stereotyping someone else, but instead of one person, its a whole ethnic group. its wrong and cruel. if someone had a problem with a person of a race because of what he/she does with his/her friends and or family, doesn't meant that their entire race needs to be the same. everyone is individual.

it's being lazy....not taking the time to actually get to know an individual. Making negative generalizations about a group of people for the actions of a select few.
