the glue didn't work and the boat exploded in the first episode. He tried.

he could have easily repaired the boat but he didn't because he was stranded on the island with ginger and mary anne and out of the rest of the guys in the island he was the one that would most likely be able to have sex with them. back at home he was just a nerdy professor but on the island he had the chance to become the professor of love

If you got paid that much money to stay on the island wouldn't you find other things to do besides fix the boat so you could get home?
