"Unvalidated" means that is hasn't been proven valid.

Windows Genuine Advantage is a program that looks at your computer's set up, etc and then sends the info it has to Microsoft's site. The site then looks at the info and decides if your copy is legitimate or not.

If you value your privacy (which you should) you shouldn't have to use WGA, but Microsoft does try to insist on this.

There are several ways around WGA's validation, or if you happen to fail (it happens, there's a high false negative according to some), there are ways around that. I'll let you search for them yourself.

I'm not advocating piracy, but when some huge company insists on having a pseudo-spyware program in my computer so I can use their products, I take a step back and look for their hidden motives.

There is also a whole world of free programs that do the same thing as the paid ones (sometimes even better). It's called "Open Source". It's free in 4 ways - free to get (money), free to alter, free to distribute and free from strings.

Case in point - Firefox. It's an Internet Explorer alternative that's free to get, free of nasty licenses, free to alter and you can freely share it. It's also an awesome way to surf the net - especially with free add-ons.

Try Firefox side by side with IE for an hour a day, for about a week. If you like it, keep it. If you love it, share it. If you hate it, uninstall it.

The ability to download from Microsoft is dependant upon having your copy of Windows validated. If your copy is genuine, you need to install the activeX controls from the Microsoft website. To do so, you need to click on the yellow strip that appears on the top of you screen when you try to download.
If Microsoft cannot validate your copy, you need to contact the manufacturer of your PC. Verify that you have a genuine Microsoft Product Key sticker attached to your tower.

if you did not pirate the version of windows xp on your computer, then microsoft will give you a highly discounted version of xp if you call them.

If you are having a problem with getting your updates complain to who you bought it from. Your updates are part of the computer and they have to fix it
