Peter Gabriel was the original singer of Genesis, and during this time, Phil Collins was the drummer of Genesis. Peter Gabriel left the band around 1975, and Phil Collins stepped up to be a singer. With this change in personnel, Genesis became a much more pop band.

The Peter Gabriel version of Genesis was much more of an art-rock outfit and had very minor hits in England. In other words, you probably would not know any of the songs. I think the change was better for both bands, as a matter of opinion.

To hear Peter's take on leaving Genesis, listen to his song "Solsbury Hill" - the first song off his first solo record.

Yes, both did. Peter left for a solo career in 1975.

And to this day, Genesis fans are divided as to which version of the band was best; with or without Peter.

I'm a Peter fan. Though, Phil helped make them a huge pop act by the 80s, many 70s Genesis fans argue they traded in art for $$.

Yes, Peter Gabriel first...then he left and Phil Collins assumed the drumming and singing chores.
