sailboat race. In real life they would probably just do it and have a great time. But a story needs conflict and something that threatens the desired outcome. Suggestions?

How about one of the builders cuts a corner some where important, like the rig, or how the mast is stepped, and in the middle of the race, a storm, or squall blows through, demasting them, and they have to abandone, then after a week or so in the raft the crew starts to go crazy, commiting suicide one by one by bailing out of the raft, until there is only one left who holds on to her sanity, and survives to tell the story. She becomes very eccentric and a recluse spending the family fortune trying to invent a new type of sailboat, while also doing odd maritime jobs like running ferrys, yacht delivery, and decking on tugs. She meets a love interest on the job? her education could include one of the various maritime academys, maby not finishing, and holding resentment towards people with big licences. just a few jumbled ideas.

Sea the story in last month's Adventure magazine. There are whirlpools in the ocean (off the west coast of S. America) where the wind can stay dead for weeks and you drift in circles forever. Four scientist were trapt on a raft four four months. Amazing story....I don't know if it could work for you but great read none the less.

How about a twist on the 'Sirens of the Sea' fable? Instead of female sirens, the women sailors can be lured away from their boat by men. To make it reality based, they encounter the men during a repair between racing legs. One of the women stays behind to stay with one of the men, they fill the empty spot with another of the men from the shop, who romances two of the women on board. The women find out and fight. Of course this would come to a head during a heavy storm during the most important part of the race...

Their husbands take over and ruin the project with the macho DIY nonsense that doesn't work. =D Or make their own boat to prove their wives wrong.

To make it plausible, I would say use one of the following:

* Weather the day of the race
* Rival team of all men intimidate them, vandalize their boat throughout the project and use foul play during the race because they couldn't seduce the women into quitting the race.
* Lack of financing
* Someone got lazy and there's a leak in the middle of the race
* One of them is pregnant and begins to deliver... preferrably the day of the race. Make it the captian, too.
* A series of predictable mishaps--lack of knowledge, lack of skill, lack of funding, lack of patience...
* Everyone has different ideas about what color it should be
* Faulty materials
* One or more of the women can't swim
* None of them speak the same language (that could be fun...)
* Someone is a control freak and doesn't get her way so she sabotages the boat to wreak her revenge.

Any of those help?? =D Good luck with your story.

Maybe they could disagree on how to build the boat (the design, materials, etc) and it could jeopardize their friendships, thus threatening the desired outcome..
They would never get the boat done, or
They would finish it, but it wouldn't be as effective as it could be, or
They could finish it and enter the race, but since they were all upset with each other, they wouldn't work together as well as they could be.

death of the team leader/best craftsman(craftswoman)
a major fight within the group.
all in a bus accident, or, in a car, and crashed into by a bus, now they have casts on there arms and are walking with cruches, this is funny, cause they work hard to get the job done, but they are all busted up like.
or what if they bring in someone to help, on a rival team, they quit that team and want in on theirs, so they let her in, after much arguement, some quit due to it, then they come back to watch the race at the end, cause they are still their homegirls, and the flopper flips back to the otherside, the day of the race, only to break something important, and the girls who left who came to watch, helped fixed it in time..and they win, and sail off into the sunset????
huh huh? how did i do???
