It is a German high speed highway that at one time had no speed limit. Now due to congestion there are sections with limits.
Autobahn (pronounced [ˈaʊtoːbaːn] in IPA; German pronunciation (help·info)) is the German word for a major high-speed road restricted to motor vehicles and having full control of access, similar to a motorway or freeway in English-speaking countries.

In most countries, it usually refers to the German autobahn specifically. German autobahns have no general speed limit (though about 20% of the total length is subject to local and/or conditional limits), but the "recommended speed" is 130 km/h (80 mph). Austrian and Swiss autobahns have general speed limits of 130 km/h and 120 km/h (75 mph), respectively. In German, the word is pronounced as described above, and its plural is Autobahnen; in English, however, the segment "auto" is typically pronounced as in other English words such as "automobile". The official name of the autobahn in Germany is Bundesautobahn (BAB) (federal motorway).

spelled autobahn.. I lived in germany for many years and that thing is a work of art, there are no speed limits in many areas of it.. in the places that speed limits are posted.. they enforce it ...some areas of it have up to 6 lanes. but some areas have only 3 lanes.. the autobahn we drove on was in germany.autobahn 66 was the fastest place Ive ever seen.. taxi drivers drive well over 120 mph..very cool.. all vehicles must be inspected often too..

Its kindda like a californa freeway with no speed limits in certain areas only (the whole thing is not with out speed limits... It was initially designed during Nazi germany era.. but the fallicy of it has no speed limits at all is in error.. it has speed limits in certain areas around metro areas.. Others it does not have any speed limits at all... But unlike CA freeways.. you have to keep to the right unless passing... thats a major diff..

The Autobahn is the pinnacle of the German driving experience, perhaps the ultimate in driving altogether.

I believe Mark T. is on the money with his answer. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the Autobohn was Adolf Hitler's brainchild.
