I have found that I can save a considerable amount of money by doing a little research, and booking the hotel and air separate.

Southwest is not taking reservations beyond May 10th . The past few years I have been flying SW out of KC because they have both the cheapest fare and the only NS flights from KC. I have friends in Chicago who say SW is also the best from there to Las Vegas so I will assume that SW is probably going to be your best bet out of Detroit also. You can always check yahoo travel to see what other airlines are offering.

Thanks for adding the dates you need rooms and also the fact you wish to stay close to the strip. I did some checking on my favorite LV travel site and came up with a few options for you.

for room rates
http://www.travelworm.com >almost always the best rate
http://www.tripres.com
http://www.i4vegas.com
http://www.vegas.com

for hotel reviews
http://www.tripadvisor.com
http://www.cheapovegas.com

best site for overall LV info
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com

This is what I found, the rate, a little description and my opinion(for what it's worth)

Stratosphere - $40 - 2.5 star hotel, at the far North end of the strip, the rooms are nice/clean nothing special but not motel 6 either. The Stratosphere Tower has quite a view. The location isn't as bad as some would have you believe. The Deuce(strip bus) stops right in front, it's $5 for a 24 hour pass to ride the bus anywhere in the valley. Riding the Deuce up and down the strip from the Stratosphere to Mandalay Bay and back has a pretty high "wow" factor. Try to get one of the front seats on the upper level, if not, ride on one side of the bus in one direction and the other on the way back.

Orleans - $59 - 3.0 star hotel. very nice oversized rooms - ask for a room on the 15th-19th floor, room # 02-44, even number rooms, a room such as 1636 should have an incredible view of the strip. No, the Orleans isn't on the strip, it's 2 miles down Tropicana from the strip, but they do have a free shuttle to the Barbary Coast that runs about every 20min from 9:30am until midnight. The Orleans is maybe the best overall value hotel in LV. Too bad they had to trash there video poker/slots they use to be a great place to play also. They still have low table minimums and they are the king of low limit Pai Gow Poker..

Golden Nugget - 4.0 star - $59(+ 1 night free) which would make the avg rate $47 - This is a first class hotel, but it is downtown.

Frontier - $61 - 2.0 star hotel, but the $61 rate is good for a 600sq ft 1br Atrium suite, that's a heck of a deal > through Travel Worm. The Frontier is towards the North end of the strip, it would be a walk to any of the center strip hotels.

Tuscany - $78 - this is an all suites hotel a good two block walk from the strip down Flamingo.

Barbary Coast - $70 - 3.0 Star hotel, nice rooms, 32in plasma TV's , no pool though. But, the BC sits dead center on the strip.

Luxor - $100 - 4.0 star hotel, the pyramid rooms are some of my favorites, and their Jacuzzi suites in the pyramid are very romantic, the tub is built up into the corner of the room with an awesome view. If you're interested in the Luxor I would call and see what they would charge you to upgrade to a suite. Very nice pool area. The interior of the Luxor is incredible. If you will take the time to go to the Luxor site and sign up for their e-mail updates, they are very good about sending out room/package specials.

Travel worm has a 10% off special on all Harrah's hotels booked by 2/5/07 . Including, Paris, Flamingo, Bally's and Harrah's

Paris - $105 - 4.0 star hotel, this would be my first choice in a romantic spot for your honeymoon, ask for one of the rooms that overlook the Fountains of Bellagio. Center strip location, nice pool, eat somewhere else! they are way overpriced on their food.

Bally's - $79 - 3.5 star hotel, this one is right in the middle of the strip, sits on the famous 4 corners along with Bellagio, Caesars and Barbary Coast. Paris and Bally's are connected by a small shopping mall.

Flamingo - $97 - 3.0 star hotel - this is an oldie but goodie, very nice pool area, good location. Paris is the better buy at these prices

Harrah's - $105 - 3.5 star hotel - good location.

If it were me, I would check with Paris and Luxor to see what they would do for me as far as upgrade/room rate. Since you are going Sunday through Thursday this should give you some leverage. July is "generally" speaking a good time to pick up a bargain rate. That is, if a room in the $100-$150 range is what you're interested in.

You can save some money and still stay in a nice hotel with a great location in the Barbary Coast. BTW Orleans and Barbary Coast will price match the travel worm price. This would give you the advantage of booking a room now at a good price and then keeping your eye open for a better deal> this is what I always do.

You're more than welcome to send me an anonymous e-mail through yahoo answers if you have a Q.

Later: I forgot to mention that all Harrah's hotels also have a "best rate quarantee" it's a bit more complex than the Coast hotels, but if you're willing to jump through all the hoops they require it is a good deal, Harrah's will price match the best rate you find and then discount that rate by 25%..

Go to expedia.com and put in the dates and stuff. You can pick the hotel and flight times. We are getting married there in June and then going to Aruba...it's going to be a blast! Good luck and congrats!
