As a marching band member through high school and college, I can tell you from personal experience that locking your knees out for extended periods of time (especially in high heat) can cause you to pass out. The reason for this is the fact that the vein that brings blood back to the heart from the legs is located in the back of your knee. If you lock out your knees it will actually compress this vein, inhibiting blood flow back to the heart, and eventually blood flow to the brain, causing lack of oxygen to make you pass out.

Yes. My son was in ROTC and is still in band. He has locked his knees on 2 different occasions.
He passed out both times.
