If you could choose three books to take with you on a desert island, which three would it be and why?

I've just looked through the list of books, and there are some I haven't read.

This is a sneaky way to see what books I'd like to read and make some notes.

Many thank for your answers!

I'll give Playboy a miss;-)

Complete works of Jane Austin - cause you can get them in one volume.
Count of Monte Christ - Dumas is a great story-teller and this tale has everything in it. Each revenge is so well thought out.
Testament of Youth - autobiograph of a nurse during WW1 - beautifully written and interesting to the last word

But then that leaves out Tolken and I can't do that - oh and then there is Dickens, Not to mentioned all the sci-fi ones for light entertainment and Colin Forbes for spy thrillers ....
Only 3 books is just not enough :(

I would take the following books: The Bible (to give me hope and so i can always have the word of God close to me,to me reading it is conforting) Black Like Me (Its an old book about a white man who used some chemicals to turn his skin black-painted it- and this was in the olden days when there was racism at its worst, its an interesting read and it gives the perspective of what its really like to walk in someone else's shoes) and third and finally i would take the play book of shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (its in my opinion a great love story as it paints a portrait of what real life love is about and how things don't always have a happy ending). With these three books i would be content.

I read the above two books periodically because I enjoy them both so much
also, the Complete works of Shakespeare (got nothing but time on a desert island so why not?)

The Complete Jane Austen (all her books in one...that counts as one). Peter Pan because it'd give me hope. And perhaps Swiss Family Robinson since it's a deserted island and it could possibly help :o) (I do think it's a good book besides the "help")

The Histories (by Herodotos)
The Lord Of The Rings (by Tolkien)
The complete works of Shakespeare

All are long books that I enjoy. They should keep me sane for a year or two at least. If I took shorter books I would go insane very quickly,

Ok, the complete works of Shakespeare (that's going to take SOME time to read!), an encyclopaedia (finding out facts and alleviating boredom) and the biggest crossword book I could find.
