If you are talking about wiping off your hard drive of deleted files, download the free program Eraser5.8
where you will be able to delete a file and write over the same file some 32 times, making it imposible for any file recovery software to read those files.

They sell "forensic" software to assist police in checking for deleted files that are usually still there. The various log files and registry entries that Windows squirrels away. Sometimes your firewall programs will store entries of problems it prevented, which might reveal all those porn sights that have been visited.
The number of bread crumb trails Windows leaves is incredible.
If you are worried about this sort of thing, download one of those Live CD's of Linux such as Kubuntu, Knoppix and others. It boots from the CD and only works in your ram. Nothing is done with the harddisk. However, your ISP may have records of your transactions, even though in this instance your computer won't.

well that can look on the files that your computer hard drive has stored on them. Also your computer retains a record of sites you have seen. There is a program that can literally destroy all records and all completely delete files so no one could reconstruct them. But you gotta shell out the pesos for them. Nothing free no more. Just bad advice.

Because when you press delete it's not really being deleted, it's only telling your operating system to ignore it. Data has to be written over with other data for it to be removed for good, either that or destroy your hard drive.
So with data recovery software, files can be recovered and police can see that.
