what i mean is can the mind create truly original ideas or are they fragments of many other ideas already present?
is it just that we merely discover and replicate rather than create?

I think the Mighty Boosh had it best.

Man: There are things in here. Things you could never dream of.
Howard: Like what?
Man: Rubys.
Howard: I've dreamt of Rubys before.
Man:............... Lesbian Ham?
Howard: What?

I can see what you mean & I agree with you perhaps the mind is just merely replicating by crossing two previous "things" you already knew to create new things. Lesbian ham. A creative idea, but nevertheless a melging of two previous "real" things.
To originally I was going to bring up Plato's theory of Forms, but this is all for your argument. You think of a Unicorn, the "idea" or form of a unicrn exists in a plain beyopnd our comprehention.
To even think of a Unicorn one must think; "horse", "Horn"(possibly stolen froma rhino)... etc.
All these idea's that appear truly creative are perhaps based within an idea that already exists.
A very interesting question, & one that will puzzle me for many days.

You can think about things that don't exist...its what dreams are made of.

If I think that Bill Clinton is my father, does that make it true? I can imagine an animal that doesn't exist like a unicorn, does that make a unicorn real? No, we don't just discover and replicate. Humans actually create...that's where automobiles came from. Automobiles, computers, telephones never existed hundreds of years ago...someone dreamed it up and made it true.

The cloning of fruits, vegetables and animals is producing things that never existed before except in someone's mind.

The more I think about this, the more foolish your question seems. If your statement were true, there would be no such thing as an invention and new things are being invented every day. Human beings are absolutely creators with unique thought and behavior...as unique as our finger prints and our DNA.

Everything we see in our physical world, here on earth, which is not organic, is an extrapolation from the human mind. Everything!
Your desk ,your car, your bathtub, your computer, your house, it was all an idea in a human mind before it came into reality.
Earth was not created or evolved with all these things around us. We (mankind) invented or "created" every bit of it from our mind.
So, yes, of course, the mind creates truly original ideas !

The source of all knowledge and creativity comes from within the inner consciousness of mankind. "God dwells within you as you" You have unity with God in unconditional love within your own heart. "The mind is not for thinking, the mind is for receiving thought". You have access to all the knowledge and experience of all humanity, Past, Present, & Future. All awareness comes from the recognition of what is already within you.The outer universe is but a reflection of the inner universe. Be Still, and ask of your heart any question you trully need and answer for, let Go and see what comes.

well, every modern idea had to come from SOMEWHERE right? I mean, while many stories and creations are just retelling, the each have a kernel of something that must have had an original creation at some point.

Well, everything in the mind is created from what we already know. I think that we discover and create new ideas from what we know.
