A local Mosque. They are experts with this sort of thing.

If the pin is still in it, you may have an unused (or more dangerous a dud) explosive device in your possession.

Should this be the case:
You are violating the current local and federal laws by not reporting it immediately to the local police for disposition and possible disposal.
Seriously, you don't want Homeland Security crawling over your home...Call the local cops now.

*During the 70s, selling empty grenades was pretty common at headshops and surplus stores, and it is possible this is just a souvenier toy...but if you don't know for sure...Find Out Now!

**If you have children in the home, I would remove it as carefully as possible to the backyard until the police arrive...but the cops will tell you not to touch it...your personal choice at this point.

usually the date of the manufacturer can only be seen if you just pull out the pin...

Just kidding. Don't do it!

Follow the advice given by others above. Call in someone who knows.

A true story: there was a metal scrap shop on New York's Canal street that for many years had two bombs (the sort you drop from planes) as decoration just outside their door. They'd had them there flanking the door for maybe twenty years. Then one day a trained ordinance guy took a close look at them, and deicovered they'd never been disarmed. They were still ready to rock and needed only a healthy drop onto their noses to explode.
A full fledged military bomb squad came and reclaimed them.

Shows to go you. Handle with care!!!!!

most grenades are dated under the peice of metal that comes off the top, just pull out that little thing that looks like a key ring and look for the date under that metal strip.

If the Grenade is real, it is very unstable, and dangerous. It may be a smoke grenade or a dummy. In any case be careful.

Grenade as in Hand Grenade? Just call your local police bomb squad and let them know all about it. They will take it from there.

Unless it has been deactivated you are playing with your life and that of anyone else in the vicinity. Explosives become unstable over a period of time. Do as the others have suggested. Call the local police and have them come and pick it up. Do not transport it yourself.

First, pull the pin and look inside the hole. There should be a serial number with a date etched inside. If you don't see it, look closer... If several minutes pass and nothing happens, you have a dud and it's worthless!

Take it no where.

Call the police and get them to organise its removal. Forty years can mean a lot has happened inside and it could well be unstable.

If I were you, I would call the bomb squad, and have them come to you. Unless of course, you are positive it is dead. Even still, If you enjoy life, call them anyway. You have too much at stake.
