I assume you are talking about the book 'The Scarlet Letter'.

The book centers around the Puritan eras. It goes into the society of the puritans and questions their judgements. It's also about human nature and essentially how the Puritan ideal goes against basic human need. Its also about one woman's strength and perseverance. But its also about betrayal and adultery...my suggestion is to read the book and if you have already....read it again.

The scarlet letter belongs in the puritan age because it is a puritan-based law that would not fit in to today's society. In this day and age, if the law required adulterers to wear a scarlet A, three things would happen:
1. Almost half the population would be wearing letter As
2. There would be a lawsuit from the ACLU stating that it was unfair and against civil liberties to humiliate people
3. Nobody would wear them if they were supposed to, unless the police really checked up on them. Heck, in this day and age, the police can't even make sure the child molesters register.

scar·let let·ter

(plural scar·let let·ters)
n
letter A worn by adulterous woman: a scarlet letter "A" that a woman convicted of adultery was formerly made to wear, especially among the Puritans of 17th-century New England

The Scarlet Letter, a novel (1850) by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The title of this eloquent plea for tolerance refers to the red letter "A" that Hester Prynne, a woman living in mid-17th-century New England, is forced to wear as punishment for an adulterous affair. While her husband and lover are consumed by anger and guilt respectively, Hester's honesty and strength of character help her to survive the scandal.

There is nothing romantic about the scarlet letters. It was a harsh punishment for women who weren't chaste enough for their Puritan community. (Note how men never seemed to meet the same fate.)
