Under the terms of this agreement, the Democrats agreed to accept the Republican presidential electors (thus assuring that Rutherford B. Hayes would become the next president), provided the Republicans would agree to the following:

To withdraw federal soldiers from their remaining positions in the South
To enact federal legislation that would spur industrialization in the South
To appoint Democrats to patronage positions in the South
To appoint a Democrat to the president’s cabinet.
Once the parties had agreed to these terms, the Electoral Commission performed its duty. The Hayes’ electors were selected and Hayes was named president two days before the inauguration.
Why did the Democrats so easily give up the presidency that they had probably legitimately won? In the end it was a matter of practicality. Despite months of inflammatory talk, few responsible people could contemplate going to war. A compromise was mandatory and the one achieved in 1877, if it had been honored, would have given the Democrats what they wanted. There was no guarantee that with Samuel J. Tilden as president the Democrats would have fared as well.

To the four million former slaves in the South, the Compromise of 1877 was the “Great Betrayal." Republican efforts to assure civil rights for the blacks were totally abandoned. The white population of the country was anxious to get on with making money. No serious move to restore the rights of black citizens would surface again until the 1950s.

The Compromise of 1877 was the solution on who would be the 19th President of the US. Tilden , a Dmocrat had received 184 electoral votes and his Republican Rutherford B. Hayes had 165 electoral votes .Tilden needed 1 electoral vote to be President and there was 20 still contested electoral votes.A 15 member commission was established consisting of 8 Republicans and 7 Democrats for each state, 4 in number to decide . Following party lines the commission voted 8-7 in each state for Hayes. This was due to Hayes compromising by giving up on the Reconstruction of the Southand it would come to an end. Hayes lost the popular vote by 200000 votes but won the electoral vote 185-184 to give him the presidency.

Well as far as I know, it was settlement of some personal dispute between one Miss Abegail Wortspittle of E. Hartford Conn. and Master Jerimiah Higgenbottem of North Pond, R.I..

After 7 years of engagement, Master Higgenbottem insisted that the couple should commence sexual congress although not legally married. Miss Wortspittle absolutely refused, insisting that she wished to remain in a virginal state until the vows of matrimony were taken. After many months of wrangling and dispute over this, a comprimise was finally agreed upon in the Spring of 1877 whereby Miss Wortspittle agreed that if
Master Higgenbottem would cease his insessant harrassment, she would agree to provide weekly handjobs to alieviate her fiance's discomfort...
