Advil is excreted through the kidney (so it won't cause liver problems). However, frequent use of advil (or any other drugs in its class - NSAIDS) can sometimes cause kidney damage. Probably the most common side effect of long term use is peptic ulcer disease. Again all NSAIDS, as well as aspirin, can lead to ulcers with excessive or prolonged use.

Serious reactions would include gastrointestinal bleeding (ulcers), gastrointestinal ulcers/perforation, myocaridial infarction (heart attack), stroke, thromboemolism, high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney damage, liver damage, allergic reactions, bronchospasm (asthma), serious skin reactions, anemia.

Mild reactions include stomach ache, nausea, constipation, headache, dizziness, somnolence (sleepiness), rash, elevated liver tests, peripheral edema (swelling), fluid retention, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), bruising.

You would find similar side effects on just about any of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which also includes naproxyn (Aleve), aspirin, and a host of others.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not an NSAID, and has fewer potential side-effects.
