Problem in the U.S. is, by the time kids reach their teens, they go to other sports because those sports are much much more lucrative than soccer. In effect, the interest of the youth definitely declines. So investing 250 M through youth teams is a sorry cause because they will go against the other established sports which are living by the billions. However, they're thinking that if they will bring Beckham, he can inspire many Americans to play the sport because of his "charisma".

For me, I don't think this is effective in long-term. The MLS or the American governing body should find other ways to develop the sport.

MLS only pays $400k annually for Beckham. The LA Galaxy pays him the rest of his salary (total is around $9-10 million). The other $40 million is through endorsements and profit sharing. I heard Columbus offered Brian McBride a salary that would be second to Beckham's to come back to the USA. He decided to stay in the UK for now.

MLS is still trying to be profitable so it will be a while before most players get a significant increase in pay. And of course, no major sports teams wants to pay for its own stadium- they want the community's taxpayers to pay for it. It would be bad business for a team to pay 100% for a stadium!

We'll see how Beckham and MLS' new found publicity will play out over the next 5 years. Here's hoping MLS doesn't miss out on this golden opportunity as it rakes in cash from Beckham's popularity. It could do a lot for American soccer if it invests the extra money into marketing, player development, youth teams, and player imports. Of course, they have to wait for the money before they invest it...

Whether he is the best or not is subjective, but he is certainly one of the most decorated players in MLS who still performs very well. He is in Pele's FIFA 100 list of greatest living players and a two time FIFA World Player of the Year runner-up, with his most recent achievement being lifting Real Madrid to the top of La Liga. When he takes a corner kick everyone in the stadium stands up and thousands of flash bulbs go off. He is still in good form despite his injury. I think it is well worth the price of admission to see a world-class player play. Why do you think all the Galaxy away games have sold out?

Yea they could, but they are just taking a different approach. What I think they are trying to do is make soccer more popular first, generate some money and some interest, and then really focus on the youth once soccer has established itself more here in the States.

No, and they didn't pay 250. LA galaxy paid 50, the rest comes from endorsements and Adidas. They are only allowed to spend over the league max on 1 foriegn allocation.
