It's a few historical facts and theories held together by very many fictitious threads. The Priory of Sion, Templars, and Flagellates actually did exist, and there are theories about Mary Magdalene's function and position in regards to Jesus and his Disciples, some of which can be read about in the Gnostic Scriptures (which are actually books of the Bible that the Catholic Church removed because they were "blasphemous.") .

But the Holy Grail is only a myth, and the paintings and drawings of Leonardo da Vinci have no real religious significance. Dan Brown just used them in his novel probably for either shock value or to add excitement to the story.

There is no real Da Vinci code.

The book is fiction, he used a combination of truths, legend, myths, and theories to make the story come alive and entertain you. Thing is a lot of it is hard to prove so the best is to determine what you believe and and research using credible resources to help get a better since of how much you can believe.

it all depends on what you believe.
dan brown actually got a lot of his theories about mary magdalene and the holy grail from the book "holy blood, holy grail", by michael baigent and richard leigh. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Holy_Blood_and_the_Holy_Grail) < more info about that at the link.
the character leigh teabing is taken from the names of those authors. (leigh from richard leigh, and teabing as an anagram of baigent).
catholics obviously wouldn't believe the da vinci code to be true, other people would. again, it's pretty much your own opinion.

It's a work of fiction. People take this book way too seriously. It is written for enjoyment, not to actually try to redefine the world.

Just Dan Brown's imagination, but he made it sound very factual.

It's all true, that's why the Catholics don't like it.
