You can feel sympathy for someone you hate.
You can't feel love for someone you hate.

When u love someone u want to be with them from ur heart, ur heart says that u love them and want to be with them out of love. sympathy is just to make that person happy, and isnt based on the passion or chemistry or the love bond between the two people. its just based on how u think the other person should feel if u were to be with them. so i would say there is a big difference!
