Welcome to the endless job of fixing XP.
1.) Google is your friend.
Look up what your problem is on google - being as specific as possible. When you have product names put that in too. Chances are that someone's had the same problem and has found the answer.
2.) Notepads (paper) are your friend.
ANY changes you make you need to write down. This will serve as a record of:
a.) what didn't work
b.) what changed that messed things up more (common)
c.) what worked so when you re-format and re-install XP in a year (the average time it takes to melt down... give or take), you'll be able to get back to where you were.
3.) Open source programs are your friend.
Open source programs are looked over by many eyes without a corporate agenda. They're usually free (both cost wise and restriction wise). Open source programs also have a HUGE number of people willing to help you - 99% totally for free.
4.) Microsoft is a double-edged sword.
MS programs can work well with each other, but do not work well with others. If they're released within a few years of each other, they'll probably work well together, but more than a few years difference in "release date" may result in some problems. Sadly some are designed to specifically NOT work with other MS programs.
Case in point: MS Word. .doc files made in Word 97 are understood by newer programs (2000, etc) but the opposite is not true. 2000 .doc can't be read by Word 97. This is probably intentional - a digital version of peer-pressure.
Also: see #3 Re: Open source info on "OpenOffice".

5.) System restore is your friend.
More often than not, if something's not working after a change was made, a system restore (should have been called "Program Reverting") will solve the problem. Annoyingly, this doesn't always work the first time. Pick a different restore point and try again.
6.) LiveCD's are your friend.
So XP is having some serious issues? Freezing? Crashing? And you have something you really *need* to type up and e-mail someone... Pop in that Ubuntu CD and reboot the computer. This will load into your RAM (not touching the hard drive) an easy to use operating system. You don't have to install the basics like e-mail, internet, office, etc. It's all there, ready to go. It's also free.

Did you try using system restore ?
If yes and this did not work - try going into device manager. Hit all the (+) signs next to each device... that will open further devices... right click and hit update driver. Then Install automatically when the pop-up appears.

Yep. It is strange. Boot into safe mode and try to uninstall whatever programs/drivers is making it do that. Try system restore, or something. Hope That Helps.
